Deva Premal (Goddess of Love): Musician from Germany
The Happiness Mantra
Of all the mantras in the Yoga of Sound tradition (the yoga of music and Sanskrit chant), one may be the most important for this age. It is the ultimate yogic prayer:
Lokah Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu
“May all beings be filled with feelings of happiness, joy and freedom.”
All beings includes you, the one who’s chanting.
If you’re feeling down, there is a way to change your mood immediately. Put on the yoga music. Listen to this amazing version of the mantra by musician Deva Premal from Germany, along with her British husband Miten and flutist Manose from Nepal:
As you listen to this mantra, think “Grant all beings, including myself, a life filled with happiness joy and freedom.”
The Breakdown: Lokah Samastha
A Lokah is a plane of existence. For example, we live on Earth Lokah, Earth Plane. Next stop: Astral Lokah, the Heavenly Plane. The journey continues through five more lokahs, each more subtle than the previous, culminating in the plane of Ultimate Truth: Satya Lokah, the ultimate destination on the path to enlightenment.
Samastha: All Beings — all creatures everywhere
Sukhino: Feelings of happiness and joy
Bhavantu: to cultivate the feeling of, the Bhava
Chanting this mantra creates a feeling of happiness in the body and mind. It vibrates at the frequency of happiness. In time, your entire being becomes affected by these primordial vibrations, in a positive way.
Sanskrit: Language of Mantra
Chanting a mantra in English can be a good affirmation. However, chanting the mantra in Sanskrit goes further. Sanskrit mantras are sound formulas that produce specific results on the body-mind.
Just as chanting OM Shanti, Shanti Shanti creates feelings of peacefulness, chanting Lokah Samastha creates feelings of happiness and joy. Just listening to this soothing chant can take you from stressed and depressed to happy and chill.
Play this yoga music twice a day. Tune your body-mind vibration to the vibration of happiness.
Start with OM
OM is the most important mantra and the source of all other mantras. It’s the vibration of the higher Self, the divinity within us all.
It’s is the cosmic sound, the primal sound of the Universe, the sound of Yes!
Yet OM is just the beginning. To OM, we add a family of mantras, essential for healing and higher consciousness — mantras like Lokah Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu — May All Beings Be Happy and Free, and Asato Ma Satgamaya — Lead us From the Unreal to the Real, and the Gayatri, a mantric meditation on the spiritual Light.
Over time, Sanskrit chanting leads to feelings of contentment, oneness, happiness, joy and connection. These good feelings, these positive emotions, are the very goals of Yoga and Ayurveda.
